The Crossover is written in free verse. This is the first book I've ever read in free verse. The book was very different but it draws you into it and makes it more dramatic and emotional. In the Crossover you will read about twin brothers, Josh and Jordan Bell, and their life at home. The twins attend Reggie Lewis Junior High School while their mother is their assistant principal. Their father, Chuck, is a former professional basketball player. He played in the European League. The twins play basketball and are the main 2 on the court. Josh, nicknamed Filthy McNasty, is a forward on the court. Jordan, known as JB, is a point guard. The twins work in-sync. As 8th graders, this is their last year at the Junior High School. Last Basketball season, their team went to the playoffs but lost. This year they are going to the championship game against the team they lost to last year. Mean while, JB gets a girlfriend in the middle of the season. Usually JB and Josh would go home do homework, eat, play basketball, play basketball, play basketball, and then go to bed. Now with JB's girlfriend JB spends more time out and about with "Miss Sweet Team," Josh nicknamed her. JB and Josh are losing their bond and Josh is getting aggravated, upset, and aggressive. To express his anger, he puts it all out on the court, getting plenty fouls, his mother, Crystal, see's this and disapproves. Crystal suspends Josh from basketball until he can get it together. The basketball season carry's on without Josh. Josh is bored at home and finds a locked box. He tried to open it but gets caught by his brother. JB joins in and they eventually break it open. They discover many papers talking about their Dad's final injury and surgery options. They find his championship ring and a invitation to try out for the Los Angeles Lakers. The boys return everything and act normal. They soon her their parents arguing about how Chuck needs to go to the doctor but refuses any medical help because his past experiences with doctors and death. This is shocking to the boys. The next day was a play off game and Josh was still not back. Josh watched the game on the bench while his parents were in the crowd. In the middle of the game, Chuck is holding his chest as he is in pain. Crystal takes him to the doctor and discovers he has hypertension, high blood pressure. Another shocking event. If Chuck doesn't change his diet or refuses to take his medicines for hypertension, then there are very many concerns toward death. Crystal, very stressed allows, Josh to go back to basketball as they advance into the finals. The championship game is when the emotional, dramatic part of the free verse really gets to you. JB and Josh start gaining their bond back, even with Miss Sweet Tea. As the story goes on, it's time for the championship game. Unlike any sport you play, of course JB and Josh were nervous. The game starts and the twins become in-sync. The game is very close. At halftime the twins realized that their parents aren't where they were. Josh checks his phone and Crystal says something around the lines of, "Just something with Dad's Hypertension. He'll be fine! Go get'em boys." The game goes on and the Reggie Lewis Junior High School team wins the championship! The boys return home with a championship and their father fine. But, one day, when Josh was playing 1-on-1 with his dad, he collapsed in the middle of it. He had a massive heart attack and died later at the hospital. Josh and JB were shocked, terrified, aggravated, etc. Their Dad was not just their Dad but their best friend. This tragic event left it suspenseful. This book left me upset but it was a good book overall.
